DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT
Type Of Measure Questionnaire
Brief Description

The PKQ-OA comprises 16 multiple choice questions with 30 correct answers.

The 16 questions are divided into four subgroups. (i) Disease process contained questions on aetiology, symptoms and diagnostic tests. (ii) Drug therapy dealt with the effects of commonly used medications, their side effects and how to take them. (iii) The exercise and rest section included the efficacy and suitable methods of exercise, and techniques that facilitate a good night's sleep. (iv) Joint protection and complementary therapies section included the most suitable methods of joint protection and energy conservation, pain relief and knowledge of proven complementary therapies.

The PKQ-OA included 80 responses of which 30 were correct. Patients were also provided with a ‘don't know’ option to each of the 16 questions to enhance the chances of completion for reluctant responders.

The questionnaire is scored by awarding one point for each correct answer.

Score Interpretation Higher scores indicate better disease knowledge
Cut-off points The analysis of the PKQ-OA showed the median questionnaire score to be 19

Other Comments

A Flesch reading ease ≥70 (fairly easy to read) was set for the PKQ-OA and this was attained by version 3 of the questionnaire (Flesch Index 72.9)
