| DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT | |
| Type Of Measure | Scale |
| Brief Description |
The Activity Patterns Scale (APS) is a valid and reliable instrument to assess activity patterns in patients with chronic pain; it evaluates avoidance, persistence, and pacing. The instrument consists of 24 items grouped into 8 three-item subscales: pain avoidance, activity avoidance, task-contingent persistence, excessive persistence, pain-contingent persistence, pacing to increase activity levels, pacing to conserve energy for valued activities, and pacing to reduce pain. |
| Number of Items | 24 |
| Range | 0-96 |
| Responses options/scale |
Yes 0 (not at all) to 4 (always) |
| Developed for | --- |
| PRACTICAL APPLICATION | |
| Method of administration | Interviewer/assessor |
| Recommendations to score |
Participants are asked to indicate to what extent the statement applies to them on a 5-point scale ranging from 0 (not at all) to 4 (always). |
| Score Interpretation | Higher scores in each subscale indicate that the individual practises this pattern more frequently. |

| Smallest detectable change if described | --- |
| Smallest detectable change applied to | --- |
| Completion time by the patient | 10 minutes |
| Scoring time by the assessor | - minutes |
| Training to score | Not necessary |
