DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT
Type Of Measure Questionnaire
Brief Description

The FreBAQ is a multi-item, self-report questionnaire designed to quantify distorted perception of the back. When completing the questionnaire, patients are instructed to indicate the degree to which their back feel that way when they were experiencing back pain.

Number of Items 9
Range 0-36
Responses options/scale Yes
From 0 to 4
Developed for Both
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Method of administration Self-administered, Interviewer/assessor
Recommendations to score

A five-point response scale (range: 0 = ‘never’ up to 4 = ‘always’) is used to enable quantitative assessment of any reported symptoms, the final score is obtained by summing the responses from each of the nine items such that the total score could range from zero to 36.

Score Interpretation Higher scores indicate higher levels of disrupted body image.

OTHER COMMENTS
Other Comments

Specific models for different body parts where developed and validated:

  • The Fremantle Shoulder Awareness Questionnaire (FreSHAQ-J) was developed by modifying the FreBAQ. The FreSHAQ-J fits the Rasch measurement model well and is suitable for use with people with shoulder pain.
  • The Fremantle Knee Awareness Questionnaire (FreKAQ) was developed to assess body-perception specific to the back in people with chronic knee pain. The FreKAQ-J had acceptable internal consistency, unidimensionality, good test-retest reliability, and was functional on the category rating scale. The FreKAQ-J fits the Rasch measurement model well and is suitable for use in people with knee OA.
