DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT
Type Of Measure Performance-based instrument
Brief Description

The 30-s CST aims to quantify a patient’s performance on the activity “sit-to-stand movement”. A  high, straightback chair without armrests should be used.

The patient stands up until hips and knees are fully extended, then completely back down to the sitting position and this is repeated for 30 seconds.

Recommendations to score

Procedure (OARSI Manual): From the sitting position, the participant stands up completely up so hips and knees are fully extended, then completely back down, so that the bottom fully touches the seat. This is repeated for 30 seconds. Same chair should be used for re-testing within site. If the person cannot stand even once then allow the hands to be placed on their legs or use their regular mobility aid. This is then scored as an adapted test score.

Record the number of complete stands performed in 30 seconds. Use of arms to push off or incomplete stands do not count.

Score Interpretation More repetitions indicate better performance. See normative scores (i.e. between the 25% and 75% percentiles) for the 30-s CST in the OARSI Manual
