| DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT | |
| Type Of Measure | Questionnaire |
| Brief Description |
The FAIR is an outcome measure for assessing fears in patients with RA and axSpA. For its development, fears were identified in a qualitative study, and reformulated as assertions with which participants could rate their agreement (on a 0–10 numeric rating scale). Then, a cross-sectional validation study was performed including patients diagnosed with RA or axSpA. The FAIR questionnaire may be helpful for physicians taking care of patients with RA and axSpA to evaluate the levels of fear and psychological distress in their patients, and for investigating differences in psychological distress between patient groups, in order to provide a basis for explaining such differences. |
| Number of Items | The scale comprises 10 items |
| Range | 0-100 |
| Responses options/scale |
Yes Each item is scored on a 10-point numerical rating scale ranging from 0 (no fear) to 10 (strong fear). |
| Developed for | Clinical practice, Research |
| PRACTICAL APPLICATION | |
| Method of administration | Self-administered |
| Recommendations to score |
The total score ranges from 0 to 100 and was calculated as the sum of the 10 individual item scores. |
| Score Interpretation | Higher scores indicate higher levels of fear |
| Cut-off points | Low fear cluster <51(sensitivity: 0.92; specificity: 0.93). High fear cluster > 77 (sensitivity: 0.90; specificity: 0.91). |
| Cut-off points applied to | --- |
| Smallest detectable change if described | --- |
